Note: N264 Cook County Death index gives 12 Feb 1879 as the birth date, but it is estimated. Parents Albert C Noteware and Eugenie Edwards. His occupation at the time of his death was salesman. Buried in the Calvary Cemetery. Described as John Edwards’s favorite grandson, Philip was raised by John and Nancy Edwards after the death of his parents. Philip was 3-4 years old when his father died, then lived with his mother in the home of his grandparents John and Nancy Edwards. Philip’s mother, Rachel Eugenie, was very ill during this time and died when Philip was 10. The nature of her illness and cause of her death is not known. Noteware Has Not Been Seen Nor Heard From SInce Tuesday Philip J. Noteware, 3144 Dupont avenue south, real estate man connected with the White, Darling, Baker company. Security Bank Building, has not been seen nor heard from since Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock. At that time he purchased a record for his piano player of Foster & Waldo, 29-33 Fifth street south. He telephoned his wife that he was coming home, but he did not come. He left the record at Fostr & Waldo's telling them that he would call for it later. SInce that time the police have been unable to trace his movements except that he was seen by a friend in front of the Metropolitan LIfe building about 3 p. m. Tuesday. Detectives Fos and Bezanson have been working on the case. Mr. Noteware's business is said to be in good financial condition and it was found that he had made a big deposit at a bank a few days prior to his disappearance. He owns an automobile, but his wife did not know at what garage he was in the habit of keeping it and the detectives have not been able to locate it yet. Mr. Noteware has not been in good health for the last week or two, but it was not thought that he was worrying about it, for he was at his place of business every day. At the time of his disappearance he had a scarf pin with a carat diamond setting. He had also a gold watch and a ring. It is possible that he had considerable money on his person. When last seen he wore a light suit and a form-fitting overcoat. He had on a red tie with a diamond stickpin in it. His wife and friends fear that he has been held up or has met with foul play of some kind. The police are lending every effort to locate the missing man. 1909 - Minneapolis Morning Tribune Jan 26 1909 Noteware Hadn't Been Far Missing Real Estate Man Had Spent a Few Days in St. Paul Philip J. Noteware, 3144 Dupont avenue south, the Minneapolis real estate man who disappeared last Tuesday, returned to his home yesterday afternoon. He has been in St. Paul most of the time since his disappearance. His absence was first reported to the police on Friday, and yesterday circulars containing a description of him and offering a $25 reward for information as to his whereabouts were sent out by the chief of police. Wife frantic. 1909 - 2 November Tuesday - Oakland Tribune article POLICE SEARCH FOR MINING MAN ________ Philip J Noteware Missing and Wife Asks Aid in Locating Him ______ Philip J. Noteware, a mining man, formerly of Minneapolis, Minn, but who for the last few weeks has been residing at 3125 Grace street, Fruitvale, has been reported to the police as missing by his wife. She states that he left home on October 27 and that she has not heard from him since. The wife is greatly worried and fears that something serious may have happened to her husband. He had a considerable sum of money on him the day of his disappearance and the wife fears he may have met with foul play. The missing man and his wife had only been residents of this country for a few weeks. Prior to that time they lived in Minneapolis, where the husband was reputed to be a man of considerable means. In coming to California the missing man had announced his intention of engaging in mining. SEEN IN RESTAURANT At one time he had been addicted to drink, according to his wife. She fears he may have fallen into his old habits and is desirous of locating him to prevent a prolonged indulgence. She has employed private detectives to locate him, but up to date they have not been able to do so. The last seen of him as far as can be found out was last Tuesday when he was dining in a local restaurant. 1909 - San Francisco Call - Nov 3 - MISSING MAN STILL SOUGHT BY POLICE __________ Philip J. Noteware is Stanford Graduate and Real Estate Operator for Hetty Green __________ Oakland, Nov. 2. - P. J. Noteware, the mining man who came recently with his family from Minneapolis, and disappeared several days ago, leaving his wife and two children at 3125 Grade street, Fruitvale, has not yet been found. Beyond the fact that he ate breakfast in a Ninth street restaurant the night he disappeared no trace of the man has been discovered by the police; but a mining man whose name is unknown , has informed Mrs. Noteware that her husband played cards in an Oakland club until late in the night of his dropping from sight. Noteware is reputed to have considerable property at Minneapolis, whence he came recently. He was graduated from Stanford university, where he was a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity and he was married in San Francisco eight years ago. Subsequently he removed to Chicago, where he was manager for the realty firm of Baird & Wagner, a house which transacts business in real estate for Mrs. Hetty Green, who has been called the richest woman in America. Leaving his Chicago work Noteware went to Minneapolis to assume management of his own interests, and lived there until his removal to Fruitvale a few days ago. Mrs. Noteware said her husband went to inquire after their baggage the night he disappeared. "He had $200 and a diamond pin when he left the house," she said, "but I do not think he has been robbed. A few years ago he disappeared this way, but after two days sent for me." Noteware is 31 years of age, with dark hair, dark eyes, is 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighs 157 pounds. Arthur’s address is given as San Francisco, CA in the ad. Edward’s address 801 Guaranty Bldg, Minneapolis, Minn. Philip may have been part of this mining enterprise. Unable to make out the occupation from the document. Married, wife named Louise. Description, tall with medium build, brown hair brown eyes. Blind in one eye. Age 39. Philip died one month later. This was the year of the influenza epidemic and it may be that was the cause of his death. However the articles about his being missing in California mention the move there was due to his health.
