After the war, the family moved from Columbia Co. to Clark Co., AR. On Aug. 3, 1874, while John was grinding an axe at his grindstone under a tree, he was knocked unconscious by a bolt of lightning. His son Franklin and his brother-in-law, Frank Runyan, were killed by the same strike. He lived a few years longer, but was never well again.
