Continued: When Annie Southerland and Alexander Stanley were married, Annie'sfather Samuel gave his written consent as Annie was under the age of18. T.A. Head, a Baptist Minister of the Gospel performed theceremony. The marriage certificate was filed 15 May 1886. On 6 Apr 1885, Alexander Stanley appeared in Circuit Court inMississippi Co., MO on a charge for carrying a concealed weapon.Alexander pleaded guilty, was fined $25.00 and sentenced to the countyjail to break rock to work off the fine. Generally, blacks wereunable to pay a high fine during this period and were sentenced tobreak rock in the county jail. Most of the black people were alsounable to have legal representation in court. The sentence leviedagainst this Alexander Stanley due to his inability to pay the fineconvinces me that he was the brother of our great-grandmother, RebeccaStanley Morton.
