a. Continued:   Joseph M. Jordan and Jessie McElmurry were married by Henry T.Johnson, Minister of the Gospel in Mississippi Co., MO. The licensewas returned 27 Aug 1896. Joseph's mother Winnie Sharp gave herpermission for him to marry Jessie as he was under the age of 21.
  On 20 Jun 1900, Township of Long Prairie, Mississippi County, MO,Joseph M. Jordan and
 wife Jessie were living in Bertram, MO. Francis/Frankie was one yearold and sister, Tura (Turah May) was listed as age 10/12ths. TheJordan's indicated they had been married for four years and that they,their parents and children were all born in Missouri. There was a 19year old cousin, Mary Good, living with the family, identified as thedaughter of a farm laborer. Mary was born in Illinois; her parents inMissouri. Joseph, Jessie and Mary indicated they were all literateand the family was listed as *black.
  On 28 Apr 1910, Joseph Jordan was working as a section hand for therailroad and Jessie was doing laundry at home. Joseph and Jessieindicated they had been married once each and for 13 years. Josephlisted his age as 32; Jessie listed her age as 30. Their fourdaughters - Frankie 12, Turah May, 10, Lunda Lee, 9, and Lelia G., 8,were with them. Cousin Mary Good was no longer in the household.Their street was listed as an un-named alley next to Main Street.
  In the 1910 Census, Joseph stated he and his parents' places of birthas unknown. Jessie indicated her place of birth and that of herdaughters as Missouri, and the place of birth of her father and motheras unknown. *The entire family was listed as Mulattoes in this census.Joseph and Jessie indicated they were literate.
  On 14 Apr 1914, Joseph Jordan filed for a divorce from JessieMcElmurry Jordan on the grounds of desertion for one year. He wasgranted a divorce on this date. On 17 May 1916, Jessie married SilasGouch in Charleston, MO. the marriage was performed by Rev. Ed.Turner.
  On 5 Apr 1915, Silas Gouch was indicted for assault to kill. He wasbrought to trial on this date. The State of MO waived the felonycharge and tried Gouch on a charge of common assault to which he pledguilty. Gouch was sentenced to the county jail for six months andordered to break rock or to work on the public roads.
  The 1920 Federal Census taken in Charleston, Mississippi County, MO on10 Jan 1920 listed Joseph Jordan age 46 with a new wife, Laura age 47,who was born in Missouri. Joseph was working as a laborer and listedhe and his parent's places of birth as Missouri as did wife Laura.There were no children living in the household in this census. Thecouple's race was listed as black.
b. Note:   Henry T. Johnson, Minister of the Gospel. The license was returned tothe Mississippi County Courthouse on 27 Aug 1896. Joseph's mother,Winnie Sharp gave her permission for him to marry Jessie.
