Continued: In the Federal Census taken on 29 Apr 1910, Ferd, one of the twin sonsof Frank Robert and Rebecca, was living near Lila, Russell, and Mable Clark in Charleston,MO. The Clark's were Family 183; Ferd was Family 192. Ferd wassingle and boarding with a man by the name of Oliver Hay in theCommunity. Ferd Morton registered for the third WW I draft which occurred on 12September 1918. This draft included all men aged 18 to 45, bornbetween 13 September 1873 and 12 September 1900. Ferd gave no streetaddress in Charleston and spelled his surname "MOTON". He signed hisdraft registration card with an "X". Frank Moton was listed as Ferd'sfather. Ferd listed his date of birth as 12 October 1879 (13 Oct).Ferd's physical description listed his hair and eyes as black, that hewas a native born Negro, and had no missing limbs or teeth. He wasdoing farm labor for John Stader, R#1, Charleston, MO. There was no military discharge recorded for Ferd and his deathcertificate issued by the State of Ohio indicated no military service. Ferd Morton died at 6:20 AM at Cleveland City Hospital (currentlyMetro Health Medical Center, 2500 Metro Health Drive, Cleveland, OH,44109) as a result of Pulmonary Tuberculosis and Pott's Disease of the3rd and 4th lumbar vertebrae (TB of spinal vertebrae). The onset ofthe disease occurred four years prior to his admission to the hospitaland was generalized. There was also a strained back injury whichapparently aggravated the illness. Ferd was listed as not serving in the military service and wasseparated. He was a resident of the Wayfarer's Lodge of AssociatedCharities (poorhouse) in Cleveland. His parent's names and places ofbirth were not listed on his death certificate. There is no familyinformation regarding a spouse or children. Frank J. Patterson Funeral Home handled his burial and the cemeteryname was interpreted by the Cuyahoga County Archives as WesternReserve University, Cleveland, OH, currently, Case Western ReserveUniversity, although no burial ground is maintained there. TheCleveland City Hospital could have been a teaching institutionaffiliated with Western Reserve University which buried indigents ontheir grounds. Based upon a letter received from Cleveland Health Sciences Library,Case Western Reserve University 1 Sep 2000, dated 28 Aug 2000, Ferd'sbody was taken to the Department of Anatomy of Western ReserveUniversity (now Case Western Reserve University) on 18 Dec 1933. Hisbody would have been used for medical research within a period of oneyear. His remains were interred in 1934 at Riverside Cemetery, 3607Pearl Road, Cleveland, OH 44109. Case Western Reserve University ownsburial plots there and the internment would have been at theirexpense. I will forward a letter to Riverside Cemetery to confirmFerd's internment there.
