Note: ---------------------------------------------- "Elijah was one of the earliest settlers along the Black River near what is now in Croswell Mich. He was a trapper in 1835. He Camped each winter to hunt and trap and each spring he took furs to the trading post near Pt Huron by walking on the ice on Lake Huron with a fur loaded sled to the St. Clair River. It's believed he returned to Canada for several springs-Historian Rosa Dumond" Letter to JW Feb 2002 from Gween Johnson ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1842 Canada West CENSUS London District London Twp Head of family: Elijah Bisbee Proprietor of Real Property : do Non-Proprietor of Real Property: do No of natives of Canada belonging to each family of British origin: 5 No of Natives of USA belonging to each family: 3 No of years each person has been in the province when not native thereof: 10 No of aliens not naturalized: 1 No of persons in family under 5 , Male :1 Female 1 " 5<14 Male :1 Female:3 " over 30 and not 60 Male married:1 " 14 and not 45 Female and married: 1 Number of other Methodists:8 number acres occupied: 100 number acres improved by each family: 30 Crops:100 bushels potatoes, 150 lbs maple syrup, 8 cattle, 2, horses, 13 sheep, 18 hogs, 20 yds cloth mfg by family, 35 ilbs of wool... Its curious that both Elijah and brother Lawson use N.H. for New Hampshire in the 1850 census and son Julius has Vt. I think its better to use the current geograhical name of Vermont in my database. Although N.H. could be for New Haven, I think its use is a holdover from the historical land settlement when Vermont was part of the New Hampshire Grant District. -------------------------------------------------------
