Note: It comes to my attention that there is only one family listed by the name Groteskein in the 1880 U.S. census. I speculate that somehow or other when Valentine and Antonia entered the United States, their name got garbled: from Grodzki to Groteskein and they were stuck with the new name for a while and changed it to its original form sometime after 1880. There are lots and lots of people named Grodzki by the way. I guess some immigration official just got it wrong. Then again, maybe not. Nevertheless, in later years, all the family went by the name of Grodzki. Household Record 1880 United States Census Name Relation Marital Status Gender Race Age Birthplace Occup.
