Note: 1. John's second wife, Amanda, was a daughter of Curtis and Susannah (Larew) Alderson. Curtis was a son of Thomas Alderson and he was a son of Rev. John Alderson who came to NJ from England in 1719. Amanda Alderson was born 8 Nov 1807 and died 24 Sep 1883. 2. Copied from the Lawrence J. McCutcheon manuscript: "When John Davidson Campbell's twin girls were born (Jane and Nancy) it was on Church Meeting day at his father's home. The twins were so small that the midwife took the gussets out of their father's shirt sleeves to make them diapers." 3. The Presbyterian Church cemetery on Sunday Rd. in Clifty-Hico, WV is the same as the Kesler cemetery. 4. Copied from the Nicholas Chronicle of 3 Aug 1895: "OBITUARY FOR JOHN D. CAMPBELL Died.-- Near Clifty, Fayette County, on Tuesday, July 23, 1895, Mr. John Campbell, aged 91 years, 4 months and one day. He was a son of John Campbell and was the third son. His brothers had all preceded him to the better land. Abram died at this place in October, 1865, Edward died at this place also in 1886, and Robert in Cass county, Mo., [1873]. Mr. Campbell lived most of his time in Nicholas but removed to Fayette, where he made his home till the time of his death. He joined the Hopewell Baptist church some 50 years ago, but afterwards removed his membership to Jennett church, where he remained a faithful member the rest of his life. He was fond of the farm, where he spent most of his life. He was a kind, good man, and was held in high esteem not only by his neighbors, but by all who knew him. This scribe remembers being at the home of Mr. Campbell more than once, and was always treated with kindness. His many friends here, where he was born, very much regret to hear of his death. He was the uncle of Mrs. Jane Brock, of Summers- ville, and Lycurgus, Paly and Andy Campbell of this place. He leaves 8 children - 5 daughters and 3 sons. All his children live in Fayette, except Mrs. Wash Groves, who lives in this county." 5. Copied from the Virginia Hamilton manuscript: "I have heard mother tell about John Davidson Campbell being so kind and good to his mother. In her last illness John took care of her at night, the neighbors offered their services but he said no. He felt it his duty to care for her at night, that they could be with her through the daytime. (Not many boys like that now). Recently, I heard Jesse Legg, a friend of Uncle John D. Campbell's tells about Uncle John going to Church and Sunday School. Said he would come to Sunday School with bouquets of flowers pinned over his coat and some flowers sticking under his hat band. He said Uncle John called them "posies" and enjoyed giving one to his friends. I remember seeing Uncle John. While he was able he used to come over from Fayette County and visit my father and mother. I enjoyed hearing him talk." SOURCES INCLUDE: J.W. Campbell records. 1850 Fayette co., VA census. 1880 Fayette co., WV census. Nicholas Chronicle 3 Aug 1895 (obituary for John D. Campbell).
