a. Note:   1. Copied from the Lawrence J. McCutcheon manuscript: "Per Boyd's 1923 District of Columbia Directory.... Harry H. Dowling - Pool - 1828 1st N.W. - Home 'U' N.W. I suspect that Harry operated a pool hall of some kind. When Harry was very young and growing up in Washington, D.C., he was struck by a streetcar while riding his bicycle and had both legs severed. He wore artificial limbs. My family would visit him and he would have his "legs" standing in the corner with trousers, suspenders, shoes and socks in place. He would move around his apartment by jumping on to the floor and swinging his body in a forward motion. He was a very kind and caring individual. The 1931 and 1939 directories showed his home address as being 1101 15th Street N.W. Apartment 301. The 1943 directory showed the same address and his working at the General Accounting Office. His wife Madge (Mattie Hughes Campbell Dowling) was shown in the 1939 directory as being the manager of a card and gift shop owned by Walter H. Giesel." Notes for Mattie follow: Residence: Lived at 3200 16th Street N.W. Washington, D.C. according to the letter of appreciation on United States Senate letterhead received from John F. Kennedy: December 1, 1960 "My warmest thanks for your dedicated assistance during the campaigne, your loyalty and support were vital in making all our efforts successful" And a similar note dated January 19, 1961... "I hope that these few lines will convey my warm appreciation for your efforts during the campaigne. I am most grateful for the splended enthusiasm of my associates. I am only sorry I have not been able to personally thank you for the excellent work which you performed in behalf of the democratic ticket. Without your unrelenting efforts and loyalty victory would not have been possible last November 8th. With all good wishes, I am Sincerely, John F. Kennedy" 2. She did not have any children.
