a. Note:   1. Obituary from the Nicholas Chronicle (as per McCutcheon manuscript): "Lewis Milam, aged 61 years, died at his home in Charleston last Mon- day afternoon. Deceased was a Nicholas County man. He was a son of the late Ebanezer Milam, and was born and reared near Lockwood. In the eighties he taught school in this and adjoining counties. In 1892 he was given a position as railway mail clerk. His first run was between Camden On Gauley and Parkersburg. Later he worked the mail from Charles- ton to Elkins and his last work was on the Virginian from Charleston to Roanoke, Va.; he was placed on the retired list a few years ago. Years ago he was in a wreck on the Coal & Coke Railroad, was badly injured from which he never fully recovered. Lewis Milam was a real man. He enjoyed the confidence and respect of all the people who knew him. He was of a genial, solid disposition, and he held friends as he made them. He was twice married, his first wife being a daughter of the late A.N. Campbell, of Cross Lanes, this county. She died in August, 27 years ago, and a few years ago he married his second wife who survives him. A daughter of the first marriage sur- vives. Deceased is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Charles I. Hill and Mrs. Ed Hamilton, both reside near Charleston. The remains were laid to rest by the side of his first companion in the cemetery near Zoar Church, at Cross Lanes, Wednesday afternoon surrounded by a large crowd of friends and old neighbors. Rev. W.H. Bias conducted the funer- al and the services at the grave were conducted by the Summersville Masonic Order."
