Note: 1. John Campbell is believed to have been born about 1730 in Argyleshire, Scotland. Family tradition suggests that his parents were Duncan and Mary (McCoy) Campbell and that they moved from Scotland to Northern Ireland. John married Mary Stuart in the 1750's and this marriage took place in Northern Ireland. Their only son, John Campbell, was born either on 3 or 5 May 1758 and his birthplace may have been in Ulster, Northern Ireland. In 1770 this family left Northern Ireland for the United States on the H.M.S. Humbold that was captained by Hugh McDermott. The parents died during the voyage and were buried in the North Atlantic Ocean. The son, John Campbell, was befriended by the captain and was probably raised by a foster family in New York city. No proof of any of this has been found and no passenger list or ship by the name of H.M.S. Humbold has ever been identified. All of this "story" is "family tradition" based on the unpublished work of Sydney M. Campbell (RIN 29), a son of Edward Campbell, and from family records compiled by J.W. Campbell of Lookout, WV in 1948. The only record that is close to being that of John Campbell was found on p. 59 in "A Dictionary of Scottish Emigrants to the USA" by Donald White (1972): "Campbell, John, aged 12. From Stornoway, Lewis, Ross and Cromarty. To Philadelphia, Pa., on Friendship, ex Stornoway. 2 May 1774. Servant. (T.47/12)." However, in relation to John Campbell (RIN 5), the name of the ship, arrival port and date of passage do not agree with the "family story." J.W. Campbell suggested that John Campbell (RIN 3) was related to the poet, Thomas Campbell, and descended from Sir Colin Campbell, the commander of a Scottish Army of two Clans, The McGregor and the Campbell clans. This army was part of the starving English garrison that was surrounded by the Indians at Lucknow, India and the battle gave rise to the song, "The Campbells are Coming." This line of though was also suggested by Sydney M. Campbell. J.W. Campbell also suggested that Mary Stuart was of the famous "Stuart Line of Scot Highlanders." Although the above "facts" that have been passed along by the John Campbell family of Nicholas co., WV are very interesting, most of them are totally lacking in any type of proof.
