Note: 1. The physical description of A.H. Canterbury in 1865: 5'5"; light hair; blue eyes, fair complexion (copied from record on file at the MO Adj. Gen. Office in Jefferson City, MO; Missouri State Guard records). The above information is from records of Company H, 16th Regiment. 2. At the age of 22, A.H. Canterbury was a private in Co. B, 3rd Regiment. Records indicate that he had typhoid fever and was admitted to the hospital on 7 Dec 1861 and he returned to duty 6 Jan 1862. 3. Could not locate his name in the 1870 and 1900 MO census. In 1920 he was living with his daughter and son-in-law, Harriet and Baker Barnes. 4. It is quite possible that A.H. Canterbury and Malissa had three additional children who died either as infants on at a young age. Sandra (Ellis) Wright of Laddonia, MO sent the following information; she had copied it from a family Bible that once belonged to Frances (Canterbury) Ellis: Pearl Canterbury-- born 21 Aug 1866 -- died 1 Sep 1866 Chapple R. Canterbury-- born 13 Jun 1871 -- died 13 Nov 1871 Maggie J. Canterbury-- born 3 Aug 1872 -- died 7 Nov 1874 These names and dates were in a list of the A.H. Canterbury children so it is a fair assumption that they were children of this family. 5. Copied from the Mexico Intelligencer of 9 Jun 1921: "A.H. CANTERBURY RETIRED FARMER, OF AUDRAIN, DIES Well Known Audrain Man Passed Away Tuesday Night at Home of His Daughter, Mrs. O.F. Ellis. Alfred H. Canterbury, a retired farmer of Audrain county, died Tuesday night at the home of his daughter, Mrs. O.F. Ellis, six miles north of Thompson, Mo. He was in his 86th year. Mr. Canterbury was born in Frankfor[d], Ky. He came to Audrain when a small child and had made his home in this county practically his entire life. He was married to Miss Malissa Shell of Ralls County, who died about 26 years ago. Deceased is survived by five children: Mrs. J. [O.] Ellis of Muskogee, Okla.; Mrs. Baker Barnes, Mrs. J.W. Holloway, Mrs O.F. Ellis, of near Thompson, and C.A. Canterbury of Baker City, Oregon. The funeral will be held at 10:30 o'clock Thursday morning at the Ellis home north of Thompson. The Rev. J.D. Greer will conduct the service." 6. Copied from page 703 of the 1884 History of Audrain County, MO:6 "ALFRED H. CANTERBURY, farmer was born in Marion county, this State, September 27, 1836, and was a son of Franklin P. and Nancy Canterbury, who settled in Audrain county in the spring of the following year. Alfred H. was reared in this county, near Mexico, and in 1861 enlisted in the State Guard, under Gov. Jackson's call, and served with fidelity until the expiration of his six months' term. After that he took no further part in the war, but remained quietly at home, engaged in agricultural pursuits, the calling which makes "the wheaten garland grow." On the 31st day of December, 1862, Mr. Canterbury was married to Miss Malissa A., eldest daughter of Judge Shell, a sketch of whose life appears on a succeeding page of this work. Mrs. Canterbury was born in Tennessee, February 6, 1842. Following his marriage, Mr. C. settled on the Littleby, where he was engaged in farming for seven years. Then he accepted the superintendency of the county farm, which he carried on until 1872. Mr. Canterbury now returned to farming on his own account, but in 1878 was again solicited to accept the superintendency of the county farm, which he acceded to, and still has charge of it, but owns a farm of his own, to which he will remove during the present year. His own farm contains over a quarter-section of land, and is well improved. Mr. and Mrs. C. have a family of five children: Carrie C., who is to graduate at Hardin College during the present year; Hattie V., who is also soon to graduate at that institution; Claude A., Ollie E. and Frankie M. Mr. and Mrs. C. are members of the Christian Church. Mr. C. is an energetic farmer and well respected citizen." SOURCES INCLUDE: Elmwood Cemetery, Mexico, MO (Lot 116, Block G).
