Note: 1. John's second wife, Eliza Hulda Hickman, was born in 1843 in VA. 2. He was a member of Hounshell's Btl., VA Cavalry, Partisian Rangers, also known as the Morris Independent Battalion and Thurmond's Battalion - 3rd Lieutenant - and he appears on a roll of prisoners of war paroled by order of Col. John H. Oley on 26 Apr 1865 at Lewisburg, VA. His occupation: farmer, age 32, mustered into service in 1863 at Greenbrier co., VA; eyes: blue, hair: dark, complexion: dark, Height: 5'9". (Microcopy #324, Virginia Roll #206, Civil War Confederate Records--from Larry McCutcheon). 3. Copied from the 7 Mar 1901 issue of the Nicholas Chronicle: "JOHN S. CAMPBELL DEAD John S. Campbell, former resident of Nicholas county, brother to Messrs. A.N. and P.L. Campbell and Mrs. Virginia Miller and Mrs. Edna Foster, of Kesslers Cross Lanes, died at Ceredo, West Virginia, the 9th inst., after an illness of three weeks with pneumonia fever, age 70. Mr. Campbell was well known to our older residents, having been born and raised at Kessler's Cross Lanes. He was twice married, first to Miss Catharine Kessler and second, Miss Hulda Hickman, both having preceded him to the better world several years since. He leaves four daughters and two sons to mourn the loss of a kind and devoted father. His younger daughters and son were with him at the end, rendering every care and attention in their power. The remains were brought to his late home, on the 8th inst., and after appropriate funeral services by Revs. Coke and McVey, of the Baptist church, interred beside those of his late wife.
