Note: 1. Copied from the Nicholas Chronicle of 2 Apr 1908: "PALEY L. CAMPBELL This well known citizen was born at Kessler's Cross Lanes, Nicholas county, West Virginia, July 28, 1833. He was reared on a farm and lived in the same neighborhood all his life, except a few years in which he was a soldier in the civil war having been a member of the Twenty-second infantry, Confederate army. On May 13, 1867 he was married to Miss Elizabeth McDermott, of Nicholas county. After a sickness of several months he died March 25, 1908, aged 74 years, 7 months and 27 days. Mr. Campbell was kind courteous and sociable in his disposition, a good neighbor and true to the sacred relations of friendship. During his extended sickness, he was very patient, grateful to those who ministered to his comfort, and appreciative of calls and visits whether made by his oldest friends or by the little children of the neighborhood. He made a profession of faith in Christ about thirteen years ago. For several weeks before his death, he realized that the end was near. He spoke calmly of death, gave directions in regard to his funeral and burial, told his family not to shed tears for him, and expressed his readiness to leave this world and go to a better one. Funeral services were conducted by the writer of this article at Zoar Church, on Friday, March 27. Parts of the 39th Psalm and 15th chapter of first Corinthians were read. Geo. A. Thorne, Wm. G. Graves, John D. Groves and John J. Halstead, surviving soldiers of the Civil War, were present and acted as honorary pall bearers. The active pall bearers were Clark Malcolm, Jesse Legg, Junie Eakin, John H. Walker, Earl McCutchen and Floyd Halstead. A beautiful tribute of flowers was placed on the grave by girls of the neighborhood. Mr. Campbell is survived by a widow ------ and three daughters." 2. Was a member of Co.
