Deceased was a prominent Mason and was well known in political circles in the state, being a member of the congressional committee of this district at the time of his death. He was a whole-souled gentleman. He was always glad to meet his friends -- and his friends were always glad to meet him. He [was] about 55 years of age." (He died from drinking poison (carbolic acid...thinking it was gin) at the Wagon Road Camp near Silver Bridge at Kanawha Falls while camping and drinking). --Information from Robert E. Campbell-- 4. Copied from the Lawrence C. McCutcheon manuscript (excerpt from a letter dated 18 Nov 1983 to L.C. McCutcheon from Mayme Leota McCutcheon Ferguson of Frederick, Maryland): "I don't know if you ever heard the details of Grandfather Campbell's death but he and other farmers in the area took produce (hay, feed, etc.) at intervals to Gauley Bridge, which was the nearest shipping point. In December 1908 (I believe) he and another man were on a trip - the weather was bitterly cold and he had his "bottle" hidden in the hay on the wagon. Thinking he was getting a drink to warm him up, by mistake, in the dark he got a bottle of lineament used for the horse and died a tragic and sudden death. It was not long before Christmas, and he, no doubt, planned to use some of the money for gifts and necessities for his family. My Grandmother Campbell used to tell us this story and how they heard the wagon as it rattled across the little bridge as they drove up to the house to break the news. She also said for years after- wards, at that time of the year and at same hour of the night, the sound of the wagon crossing the bridge could still be heard!!" 5.
