Notes
a. Note:   1. Moved to Kentucky about 1866. 2. The following information was sent to Virginia Frances Hamilton by Jennie Virginia McDermott about her parents: "I would like, if permissible to reminisce a little on my Mother as you may not know her as she really was in her life and in her home. Rebecca Ann Campbell McDermott was a lovable character and was loved by all who came in contact with her or associated with her in any way. She was spoken of in the community as the best information on important subjects. She raided her children by the kind loving method instead of the stern method. This verse was written of her when she passed away. Death has robbed us of our loved one, Whom we loved and cherished dear. It was Christ, yes, Dear Christ But can we help but shed a tear? She will wait for us in Heaven, By the river's farther shore Where the billows break and murmur Praise to God forever more. My father, Hugh Washington McDermott was a fine man but so different in temperament from my mother. He was spoken of by his friends as an homest man, your own Nicholas County paper said of him at the time he passed away that he was well liked, that if he was your friend you know it or if he was not you also knew it. Meaning that he was a relaible honest man true to that saying, "Honesty is the best policy." Hugh W. McDermott owned a farm here in Nicholas County. It was called the McDermott farm and was on the road between Summersville and Enon. He lived there for several years. Five of his children were born there, then he moved to Kentucky, four of his children born in Kentucky. The McDermott farm is now owned by the Cardens." 3. Hugh W. McDermott was Sheriff of Nicholas County at one time. 4. Have also seen his birth as "abt 1831" (Freda Swinehart).
