a. Note:   1. From the Mexico Intelligencer of 13 Mar 1924: "MRS. D. A. ELLIS DIES HERE AT HOSPITAL SAT. Mrs. D.A. Ellis, 87 years of age, and a prominent Audrain county resident died Saturday morning at 10 o'clock at the Audrain County Hospital following an illness of several months, the past two of which have been spent in the local hospital. Mrs. Ellis who was born in Virginia June 16, 1836, came to Missouri when a young girl and was before her marriage, Miss Elizabeth Callahan. Her first marriage was to J.Y. McLane of this city, who died about fifty years ago. In 1871, she was married to D. A. Ellis, and until his death some time ago, made her home on the Ellis farm north of Mexico. At the time of her illness, Mrs. Ellis was making her home with her son, John McLans, W. Love street. She was a member of the Methodist church. Mrs. Ellis is survived by four Dr. Tom McLane of Illinois, John who is in Colorado, Octave and Nolan Ellis of Audrain county. She also leaves a number of relatives and friends. 2. Copied from the Mexico Ledger, 8 Mar 1924: "MRS. ELIZ. ELLIS DIES AT AUDRAIN SATURDAY MORN. Was 87 Years Of Age -- Confined In Audrain Hospital For Past Ten Weeks -- Member of Methodist Church. Mrs. Elizabeth Ellis of 427 West Love street, died at the Audrain County Hospital at 1 o'clock Saturday morning. Her condition was pronounced serious Friday night and she was not expected to live through the night. She has been in the hospital for 12 weeks. She was 87 years of age. She leaves bereaved a son, J.Y. McLean of Kirk Col., and a step-daughter, Mrs. Wm. [Wallacem] and a step-son, O. Ellis. Clyde W. and Jno. are grandsons. Mrs. Ellis was formerly Miss Elizabeth [Callahan]. She was born June 16, 1836 in Virginia, and moved to Missouri while quite young and spent her early years in Boone County. She was married to John Ellis in 1871, and for many years lived in Audrain Co. After Mr. Ellis's death thirty-five years ago she moved to Mexico where she has lived since and has made many friends while here. She was a member of the Methodist Church of this city, and a splendid Christian woman. Funeral arrangements have not yet been made, but it is thought that it will be held sometime Monday. The Ledger joins in extending heartfelt and deepest sympathy. 3. Copied from the Mexico Intelligencer of 13 Mar 1924: This community was very sorry to hear of the death of Mrs. E.A. Ellis of Mexico, which occured last Saturday morning. She was born in 1836, and had been in very poor health for some time. Rev. Mitchell preached the funeral [at] the Berea church, last Monday morning at 10:30. Burial was made in the Berea cemetery. She was the grandmother of Clyde and John Ellis of Molino. We extend our sincere sympathy to the bereaved ones. 4. On 23 Mar 1923 a court hearing was held to inquire as to her sanity. Her son, John Y. McLean furnished information to the court and he was appointed as her guardian on 8 Jan 1924. Octave Ellis and Charles McLean were also appointed guardians.
