Note: 1. Copied from the Mexico Ledger of 13 Apr 1935: "MRS. LOWRY SMITH, OF OKLAHOMA, PASSED AWAY Mrs. Lowry Smith of Moorewood, Okla., died Wednesday night in a hospital in Clinton, Okla. Mrs. Smith was formerly Miss Callie Ellis, a sister of Mrs. W.H. Wallace, of this city, and was born and reared in Audrain County. She was the daughter of the late Squire John Ellis and Rebecca Darby Ellis, one of Audrain's pioneer families. Burial took place Friday in the family burial lot in Cordel, Okla. The Ledger joins in extending sympathy to the bereaved." 2. From the Mexico Intelligencer 14 Apr 1935: "MRS. SMITH DIES IN OKLAHOMA Mrs. Lowry Smith of Moorewood, Okla., formerly of this county and a sister of Mrs. W.H. Wallace, died at a hospital in Clinton, Okla., Wednesday night, a message received here by Mrs. Wallace and her daughter Miss Maude Orita Wallace stated. Mrs. Smith who was formerly Miss Callie Ellis, was born and reared in Audrain, the daughter of the late Squire John and Rebecca Darby Ellis, one of Audrain's pioneer families. Funeral and burial services took place Friday at the family lot in a cemetery at Cordell, Okla." 3. Copied from the Cordell Beacon of 18 Apr 1935: "Funeral Rites Held For Mrs. L.C. Smith Funeral services for Mrs. L.C. Smith of Moorewood, 73 years old, who died on Wednesday night of last week were held last Friday afternoon at the Cordell Presbyterian church. The services were in charge of the Rev. J.P. Atkins, pastor of the local Methodist church. Interment was made in Lawnview cemetery. Mrs. Smith was a pioneer settler in the Cordell community, coming here about thirty-three years ago. She made her home in the vicinity for fifteen years. She was a member of the Presbyterian church and of the Cordell Rebekah lodge. She died last Wednesday night at the Clinton hospital. Mrs. Smith is survived by a brother, Jeff Ellis of Muskogee; by two sons, Roy C. Smith and Ellis Smith of Moorewood; and by four daughters, Mrs. E.S. Weaver of Cordell, Mrs. Pearl Baber of Moorewood, Mrs. H.B. Hildebrand of Fort Sill, and Mrs. Maude Prosser of Roscoe, Texas." 4. Copied from the 18 Apr 1935 issue of the Cordell Beacon: "Mrs. L.C. Smith, whose maiden name was Callie Ellis, was born May 15, 1861, in Audrain county, Missouri. In 1881 she was married to L.C. Smith. To this union were born eight children. Two of them and her husband preceded her in death. She died at the Clinton hospital April 10, 1935, in her seventy-fourth year. Mrs. Smith is well and favorably remembered as one of the early settlers of Cordell, having moved here with her husband some thirty-two or thirty-three years ago. They made this their home for fifteen years. In 1903 she united with the Presbyterian church to which she remained loyal to the end. She was also a member of the Rebekah lodge here. Mrs. Smith is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Pearl Baber of Moore- wood, Mrs. Lucile Hildebrand of Fort Sill, Mrs. Winnie Weaver of Cordell and Mrs. Maude Prosser of Roscoe, Texas, and by two sons, Roy C. Smith and Ellis Smith of Moorewood. One of those who knew her best said her chief thought in life was to be a good mother and to do all the good she could in the world." 5. Callie and her brother, Abraham Pinckney Ellis, "ran" a newspaper in the area of either Belton or Temple, Texas, for a short time. Family legend "says" that she liked to write poetry. 6.
