a. Note:   1. Lowry and "Callie" are both buried in Block 4, Lot 3 of Lawnview Cemetery. 2. He died after having a heart attack. 3. Copied from the 31 May 1928 issue of The Cordell Beacon: "Services For County Pioneer Held Sunday: Louie C. Smith, father of Mrs. E.S. Weaver of Cordell, died at Hammon, Oklahoma, at 2 o'clock last Friday morning. Funeral services were held at the Cordell Presbyterian Church Sunday afternoon and were conducted by the Rev. C.F. Hoffman, pastor of the church. Mr. Smith was a former resident of Washita County coming to this re- gion in 1899. He was a farmer and buisness man here for several years. He was 74 years old at the time of his death. Mr. Smith was born in Audrain County, Missouri, October 2, 1853. He spent the early part of his life in Missouri and was married to Miss Collie Ellis February 15, 1882. He is survived by his wife; by four daughters, Mrs. Weaver of Cordell, Mrs. Pearl E. Baber of Elk City, Mrs. Maud Prosser of Roscoe, Texas, and Mrs. Lucille Hildebrand of St. Louis, Missouri; and by two sons, Roy C. Smith and Ellis X. Smith of Moorewood." 4. Copied from the 1884 History of Audrain County, MO: "LOWRIE C. SMITH one of the most stirring and energetic farmers and stock men of Audrain county, was born at Paris, in Monroe county, October 2, 1853, and was reared at that place, Hannibal, and in this county, principally in the latter, however. His father, John R. Smith, was a merchant tailor by occupation, and followed that business at the places named during Lowrie C.'s youth. He is still in the business and is now at Belton, Tex., to which he removed in 1883. For a number of years in this county, how- ever, he was engaged in farming and had a comfortable place on Lick creek. He was originally from Virginia, as was also his wife, whose maiden name was Miss Lucy Allen. They came to Missouri in 1838. They had a family of five children: Thomas E., now of Belton, Texas; Oliver P., now of Temple, the same State; John, of this county; Emma, now the wife of James A. Smith, of this county, and Lowrie C. Lowrie C., after he grew up, engaged in farming and handling stock for himself, but almost exclusively the latter. He first fed stock on a large scale in Pike county, this state, and in 1875 went to San Antonio and engaged in the sheep business in partnership with Dunlap Sims, the firm buying about 1,200 head. The summer of that year Mr. Smith sold his interest to his partner and returned to Missouri. His partner, who remained in Texas, continued the sheep business, and is now worth $75,000. On his return to Missouri, Mr. Smith resumed dealing in stock, buying, feeding, shipping, etc., and continued it with success until 1881, when he and Mr. K. Mourney formed a partnership in the sheep business and bought 1,200 head, which they took to Texas, where they established a sheep ranche. Mr. Mourney now has charge of the ranche, and they are still in the business together. Mr. Smith came back to Missouri in January 1882, and was married the 15th of the following February, to Miss Callie Ellis, a daughter of Squire John Ellis, of Young's creek. Mrs. Smith was born in this county May 15, 1861. Immediately following his marriage, Mr. Smith bought his father's old homestead on which he settled and still resides. Besides carrying on his farm, he is engaged in handling stock quite extensively, buying and shipping cattle and hogs to the wholesale markets and also buying and shipping sheep to Texas. Last year he shipped about 1,600 head of the latter to that State. Mr. Smith's farm is situated about two miles and a half northwest of Mexico, and has a neat and well improved place. He has also had good success in shipping fine blooded short-horn cattle to Texas. Mr. and Mrs. Smith have a little daughter, Pearl. He and his wife are much esteemed by their neighbors and acquaintances." 5. Notes from typed manuscript obtained from Kathryn Whitenton (daughter of Lucille and granddaughter of Lowrey C. and Callie (Ellis) Smith): "He was 29 and Callie (Amanda Lee) had just finished college. I don't know the year Lowery and Callie Smith moved to Temple, Texas. They had three children born in Audrain County, Missouri (note in pencil -- a daughter, Pearl, son Wayne and Roy). The fourth child, Winnie, was born at Temple. Callie and her brother Abraham (Pink) Ellis, ran a newspaper in Temple. Lowery had his shipping industry with a butcher ship as a side line. Callie's college degree had been in literature so she ran the society section of the newspaper and wrote poetry. An interesting sidelight to Callie is that every home she lived in was always called Temple Hill. She and Lowery had another child, Dollie, in Temple, who didn't survive. Lowery C. Smith moved his young family to Collingsworth County, Texas near Amarillo. Two more girls were added to the growing family. Maud in 1896 and Lucy (Lucille) in 1897. It was here that Lowery and a partner brought in a flock of pure-bread Merino sheep, but the cattle ranchers made the partners return the sheep to Missouri! The Smith family moved again, this time to Cordell, Oklahoma. This is home to the Smith children. It was here that Ellis was born, and Missouri-born Wayne died of appendicitis. They also lost their first grandchild at the age of five to scarlet fever. We have a picture of the Smith home in Cordell, and it does not seem possible that it held all the people who called it home. Not only Lowrie and Callie and their seven children, but also Lowrie's mother, Lucy Ann Allen Smith, made her home with them for several years after her husband died. Their eldest daughter, Pearl, came back to live for a while bringing her three remaining sons and her mother in law, after Pearl was widowed. The Smith children were reared on love, respect, literature, music, and hard work. It is high praise when a Smith says, "He's a hard worker." All the girls went away to college, and two attained Master's degrees. Sometime around 1915 Lowrie and Callie Smith and their two sons moved to Alpine, Texas and sheep ranching. After three years they were back in Oklahoma, this time to a farm on an ex-Indian Reservation. Cheyennes had sold the farm to its previous owner. This farm is near Hammon, Oklahoma and is still in the Smith family as of 1992. Here Lowrie Carnott Smith died of a heart attack in 1928. Callie (Amanda Lee Ellis) Smith kept the farm going until she died during the dust storms in 1935. Her death was caused by dust pneumonia complicated by diabetes. She and Lowrie are buried in Cordell, Oklahoma. Their children were Pearl, Wayne, Roy, Winnie, Dollie, Maude, Lucy and Ellis." 6.
