Copied from the Mexico Ledger, 15 Jun 1956: "Jewell Nulls To Celebrate 50th Wedding Anniversary on Saturday A wellknown Mexico couple, Mr. and Mrs. Jewell Null are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary Saturday. The day will be spent quietly at their home at 403 S. Clark St., in the same block where they began housekeeping a half century ago. Fifty years ago tomorrow night, Miss Edna Ellis and Mr. Null surprised their parents and friends by marrying at the parsonage of the Mexico Methodist Church. The pastor, the late Rev. C.C. Selecman, officiated. Mrs. Null, whose parents are the late Mr. and Mrs. I.J. Ellis, prominent Audrain Countians, wore a light blue suit for her wedding, and was described in the Ledger account of the event as a "handsome bride." The couple's attendants were Miss Laura Hanly, now of Topeka, Kan., and the late Jess Bratton. After a two weeks' wedding trip in Kansas City, Mr. Null and his bride returned to Mexico where he was brakeman for the C&A Railroad. He is now an operator for the GM&O where he has been employed for more than 40 years. A longtime member of the Board of Education, Mrs. Null served as treasurer of the group for 15 years of the 21. An active member of the Democratic Party, she also served for a number of years as third ward Democratic committee-woman. An enthusiastic flower gardener, Mrs. Null has nearly every known blooming plant in her yard and more than 40 species of African Violets. A past president of the Mexico Garden Club, Mrs. Null has won distinc- tion for her floral arrangements. She has also been an active member in the John Hall Chapter of the Daughters of American Colonists and the Mexico Chapter of American Revolution. Mr. Null's hobby is collecting all kinds of clocks. He now has a collection of nearly 300 with 175 of these in one room. His most prized possession is a clock from the old railroad depot on South Western Ave., given to his father, the late C.M. Null, in 1900. The Nulls have two children, Keath Null and P.J. Null Jr., both of Mexico; four granddaughters, one grandson and two great grandchildren. A daughter, Jane, died a number of years ago." 2. Copied from the Mexico Ledger, 20 Feb 1973: "Mrs. Jewell Null Dies At 85 Mrs. P. Jewell Null, 85, active for many years in Mexico's civic and political affairs and the first woman to serve on the Mexico Board of Education, died at 2:30 p.m. Monday at the Coldwell Nursing Home. Before entering the home on Feb. 5, Mrs. Null had been a patient in the Audrain Medical Center where she had been since Jan. 3 after a fall at her home at 403 S. Clark St. fractured three ribs. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Arnold funeral home by the Rev. J.C. Montgomery, pastor of Mexico United Meth- odist Church. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery. Daughter of Ira and Nellie Clanton Ellis, the former Miss Edna Ellis was born Aug. 6, 1887, at Molino in Audrain County. On June 6, 1908, she was married to Prince Jewell Null and they began housekeeping in the same block where she spent her entire life. In 1948 when she retired as a member of the Board of Education, the board honored her with resolutions of respect for "her 21 years of faithful service, for her devotion to public duty, for her almost perfect attendance at all school board meetings, and for her loyalty to the board and administrative officers during many trying times. For 15 years she served as treasurer of the board, having been elected in 1932. An enthusiastic flower grower, Mrs. Null was a former president of the Mexico Garden Club. At one time, she had nearly every known blooming flower in her yard at her home and more than 40 species of African violets. She often won distinction for her floral arrangements. To honor her for her many years of service as a garden club member and a former president, the club paid tribute to her by planting a red bud tree on the grounds of Mexico's Cerebral Palsy School. For many years she was active in the Democratic Party and for a number of years served as Mexico's Third Ward Democratic Committeewoman. Mrs. Null was a past regent of Captain John Hall Chapter, Daughters of American Colonists, and held various other offices in the chapter. For a number of years, Mrs. Null was leader of a youth group of the Mexico United Methodist Church of which she was a member, and was also active in the United Church Women. Surviving Mrs. Null are a son, P.J. Null of Mexico; five grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Mr. Null died June 25, 1957, and she was also preceded in death by a son, Keith Null, who died in 1969, and a daughter Mrs. Glen (Jane) Gilbert, who died in 1939. The family will receive friends at the funeral home this evening from 7 to 9 p.m."
