a. Note:   1. Copied from the Cordell Beacon of 27 Sep 1973: "County pioneer taken by death Pearl E. Baber, retired Washita county teacher and long-time resident of the Cordell Christian Home, died in Woodward Sunday, Sept. 23 after a week's illness. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26, at the Fourth and College Church of Christ in Cordell with Lowell Donley officiating. Burial was in Lawnview cemetery. Mrs. Baber was born in Audrain county, Mo. on Oct. 12, 1883. Her family first moved to Memphis, Texas, and then to Cordell in 1900. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lowrie C. Smith, were prominent early day residents and their farm adjoined Cordell's southwest portion. Mrs. Baber attended Cordell schools and Southwest Normal at Weather- ford. She taught at South Burns, Sentinel and Cordell before her marriage to L. Roy Shean in 1906. Shean was a partner in the law firm of Massingale, Duff and Shean, and he became the first county judge for Washita county following state- hood. He held this office until the family moved to New Mexico in 1917, where the judge died in 1919. Judge and Mrs. Shean were charter members in the Order of the Eastern Star when the Cordell chapter was organized. Following Judge Shean's death, Mrs. Shean returned to Cordell with her three sons and resumed her teaching career. In 1924 she married Harry C. Baber in Elk City. For a time they lived in Porterville, Calif., and Baber died in 1941. Mrs. Baber taught in Moorewood, Arnett, Stillwater and Elk City until her retirement. She made her home with her children for several years before returning to Cordell in 1964 to make her residence in the Cordell Christian Home. Mrs. Baber was a member of the First Christian Church. She is survived by three sons, L. Roy Shean of Roy, Utah, Glen Shean of Rockport, Texas, and Paul Shean of Woodward, a daughter, Callie B. Hugley of Lancaster, Texas, two sisters, Maude Prosser of Roscoe, Texas, and Lucile Hildebrand of Abilene, Texas; three stepsons, Harry C. Baber of San Jose, Calif., Earl E. Baber of Elk City and Buford B. Baber of Sikeston, Mo.; two stepdaughters, Irene Gilbreath of Napa, Calif., and Helen Jones of Visalia, Calif., 11 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Mrs. Baber was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lowrie C. Smith; a son, Lowrie D. Shean; three brothers, Wayne, Roy and Ellis Smith, and a sister, Winnie Weaver."
