 Ethel f w 26 In Lottie f w 24 In Phillip Rhoades was born at Shieldsville, Indiana May 13, 1842. When very young he moved with his parents to Iowa.He grew to manhood in and aroound Sigourney. He was among the first to answer President Lincoln"s Call for volunteers, and served as a union Soldier until the close of the war, when he was mustered out with an honorable discharge.
 In the year 1867, he was united in marriage with Martha Landers and last August they celebrated their Golden Anniversay. About 38 years ago Mr.
 and Mrs. Rhoads united with the Christian Church at What Cheer. Though
 not an active church worker he lived by the Bible and in his declining years his faith was stronger.
 Two years ago while taking a mans place in the hay field he was overcome with heat and since then has gradually failed in Health, but during that time he was never known to complain. A few weeks ago he contacted a cold which helped to hasten his death and on November 22nd he fought his last battle.
 The Funeral Services were conducted at the Christian Church at What Cheer the address being delivered by Rev. Mitchum, Scriptual Reading being taken form the 14th Chapter of St. John. A touching feature of the service wa presented by the few remaining veterans as they marched in ahead of the hearse, carrying the flag at half mast. Pall bearers were chosen from among friends, who had faithfully helped to care for Mr. Rhoads during his illness.
 The temple that had housed the great big unselfish, generous spirit of Phillip
 Rhoads for a span of 75yrs 6months and 9 days was laid to rest in the
 Highland cemetery east of What Cheer on Saturday, November 24.
