  5. On Golden Pond Movie Website:
Thomas Eccleston Sr. was the 7th of nine children, born in 1882 into a struggling family of textile workers in Lancashire, England. From his very beginning as a bobbin-boy, Thomas Sr. was the sort of worker for whom the hands of the clock had no meaning. For him, the day was done when the job was finished, whether it took ten, fifteen, or twenty-four hours. He became an expert in textile finishing, and rose rapidly up the management ladder until there was no further to go in Great Britain. In 1910, a few months after the birth of his first son, Thomas Jr., he came to the United States as boss finisher at a factory in Bradford, Rhode Island. His wife, Frances, and little Thomas Jr. joined him two years later. Thomas Jr. and his brother Donald would not leave school for work until both were graduates of Rhode Islands Brown University.
