Obituary; Valentine C.Woods was born in Allegheny County,Pennsylvania, December 1st,1810. At the age of four years (1814) his parents moved to Indiana where he lived for thirty-eight years. While living in Indiana he married Miss Mary Neely, August 10th,1830. To this union were born thirteen children, eight boys and five girls, of these children nine are living, four with the wife having preceeded the father and husband to the spirt world. Brother Woods was converted and joined the Methodist Epis- copal Church when about twenty-five years of age and remained a communicant during the remainder of his life. He was class leader and Sunday School Superintendent for years in West Liberty, Iowa where he held membership. The family moved from Indiana to a farm near West Liberty in Muscatine County,Iowa in April where they lived until the year 1871 when he and his wife came to Clarke County,Iowa where the wife died. In 1884 he came to Cass County and made his home with his son,Perry Woods, the remainder of his life. Brother Woods was a man of jovial and cheery dispositon, beloved and honored by all who knew him and by his goodness and cheer scat- tered sunshine about him. To his children five of whom were present in his last hours, he expressed himself that all was well with him and that he was at peace with God and that there were no regrets, only he had not been as faithful in the last eight years of his life as he would like to have lived. Thus passed away a veteran of the cross of Christ and like a true soldier regreting that he could not be in active service of his blessed Master. He died after a lingering illness of about seven weeks of heart failure January 25th,1899,aged 88 years, 1 month and 25 days. Funeral services were held at the residence of Perry Woods at 10 a.m. January 27th,1899, conducted by Rev. R.C.F.Chambers,Pastor of the M.E.church of Wiota. After the service the remains were taken to Ottawa,Clark County,Iowa and laid to rest beside his departed wife. They rest from their labors and their works do follow them. Contact: James Woods Name: Valentine Cook WOODS Given Name: Valentine Cook Surname: Woods Sex: M Note: Date of death obtained by Obituary of Laura Bundersen Woods (his second wife), The Clinton Herald, 11/6/1965. He was a veterinarian. His great-grandson, Ronald C. Woods, tells two anecdotes: "He was abig man, standing 6' 6" tall and weighing 350 lbs. So one day he wasm driving his horse and buggy home and some highway ruffians ambushed him. They ordered him to lie down under the wagon while they plundered the contents of the wagon. During the plundering, Volentine put his hands on the axle of the wagon and bench-pressed it into the air, thieves and all. The ruffians were roundly startled and quickly fled the scene, leaving Volentine to continue on his way. "A second anecdote has to do with Volentine's 6-pocket vest. Volentine would point to the vest and say, 'In these 6 pockets I carry all the medicine needed to cure the ills of man.' Continues Ronald C. Woods, "The pockets probably contained (1) catgut,(2) opium derivative, (3) ..."
