  Joseph's father Andrew died in 1907 when Joseph was only 16 years old.
  On June 5, 1917, Joseph had to fill out and sign a World War draft registration card:

  His physical description was medium height with a stout build. He had grey eyes and dark brown hair. He lived at 705 25th St., Milwaukee. His occupation was a machinist at an auto company.
  The 1920 U.S. census had an effective date of January first. The Eckl household was enumerated January third. The census page shows Joseph A., 29; his wife Bertha A., 26; and their two year old son, Robert J. The family lived at 779 23rd St., Milwaukee. That is the same address that Joseph's mother Frances had been the head of the household during the 1910 U.S. census. Joseph's cousin Martin was still living in the house. Frances had remarried and was living elsewhere in Milwaukee at that time. Joseph's occupation was a machinist.

  The 1930 U.S. census had an effective date of April first. The Eckl household was enumerated April twenty first. The census page shows Joseph, 39; Bertha, 36; Robert, 12; and "Bernadine" (actually Bernadyne) nine years of age. They lived at 2324 W. Finn Place, Milwaukee. Joseph's occupation was a life insurance salesman.

  The 1940 U.S. census had an effective date of April first. The Eckl household was enumerated April nineteenth. The census page shows Joseph, 49; Bertha, 46; Robert, 22; Bernadyne, 19; and Bertha's widowed father Carl Mundstock, 81. They lived at 2504 N. 22nd St., Milwaukee, where they had lived for at least five years. Joe was an insurance salesman. In 1939, he had earned a total of $2,947.

  (Bernadyne Eckl later married Norman Pape. They lived in Grafton, Wisconsin for many decades.They had five sons and two daughters. More about Robert Eckl is in this chart.)
  On April 25, 1942, at the age of 51, Joseph had to sign a World War 2 draft registration card. Joseph and these other 45 to 64 year old men were not going to get called for military service. The purpose of the registration was to document the mens' skills for possible use later in the war. Joe still lived at 2504 N. 22nd St. He worked for the Prudential Insurance Company. His physical description was 5' 9" tall, 195 pounds, with gray eyes, brown hair, and a scar on the left side of his chin.
