a. Note:   John WILLIAMS was listed as one of the earliest Pilots at Ocracoke Inlet. On Sept. 26, 1759 he purchased one half of the Island of Ocracoke from William HOWARD. Hyde County Deed Bk A-pg 707.
 1762 John WILLIAMS and William HOWARD sold 100 acres to Francis JACKSON. In May of 1777 he was appointed Commissioner of Capt James ANDERSON'S Company which was made up of local men and stationed at Ocracoke.
  Carteret County Tax records 1779 show John WILLIAMS as owning 1,000 acres, 9 Negroes and 100 lbs.
 In 1784 he was listed as having 200 acres.
  John WILLIAMS died in May or June of 1787. His will was proved on June 6, 1787with his son William WILLIAMS appointed administrator. The will names his children and an inventory of his estate is found in the Archives in Raleigh.
