a. Note:   "Custom Records port of Ocracoke, 1815-1856" by Ellen F. Cloud show that Joseph Williams was a sea Captain and part owner of two vessels.
  In 1820 Joseph Williams is listed as Master on the "Lodge" or "Sadge" owned by William Scarborough
  In 1824 William Scarborough and Joseph Williams register the schooner "Lodge" and list Joseph as Master. The vessel was 39 ft long, 13 ft. wide and 4 ft. deep.
  In 1828 William Williams, Joseph Williams, George Hobbs, & Simon Garrish registered the vessel
 "Thomas H. Blount" with Joseph Williams, Master. The vessel was built in Currituck County in 1817.
 It had one deck, 2 mast, 45 ft. long, 15 ft. wide and 4 ft. deep.
  On May 9, 1829 William Pain took oath as required by law and became master of the Thomas H. Blount in place of Joseph Williams, late Master.
  Since Joseph was only 35 years of age it is very likely that he drowned or had an accident on board the vessel.
