Note: Lawrence, or Ed as he was known to his friends, ran away from home when he was about sixteen and, the story goes, joined the circus. From the Web Site of Baraboo Wisconsin.." The Circus World Museum is located at the site of the original Winter headquarters of the Ringling Brother's Circus (1884-1918) in Baraboo, Wisconsin. It is owned by the State Historical Society of Wisconsin and operated by the Historic Sites Foundation. The original Ringling Brother's buildings are designated a national Historic Landmark by the U.S. Department of Interior." Apparently the Summer quarters were in Sarasota, Florida (which seems backwards). But the the circus being in Baraboo would provide an answer as to how Ed and Mae met. In later years his occupation was stage set builder and prop man in a theater. He died in the Little Flower Hospital of peritonitis due to a ruptured appendix. ------------- A family story is that George Henry told his children that in order to avoid confusion with another family named THIERS, he had adopted the Tears spelling, which had appeared on so many old records and which is used by the Kansas branch of the family to this day. When Lawrence left Kansas, he resumed the old spelling - THIERS. FTM Census Index: Selected States/Counties, 1870: THIERS, Henry IA Allamakee Co.
