Note: Datha was older than Mother (Carrie) and Aunt Mae and from their stories was so kind to go out of her way to help them in anyway she could including spending time hunting May Apple roots. Aunt Mae tells a story about Datha jumping the creek. Aunt Mae said, " We (Lakie , Mae, and others) had been picking roots which we sold at Summitt store for some spending money. They came down the hill to the creek and Datha said jump across. Well I looked at the water and it looked too deep and I didn't want to jump. Datha pulled up her dress to her knees and leaped across only to land right in the middle of the creek."
"Once after root hunting on their way home they decided that it would be easier to toss their big bags of roots down the hill than carrying it. When Datha threw hers she threw it too high and it landed in a big tree limb. They never got it down." Wonder if it's still there?
Mae said Datha always got something nice for Grethal and Kelly for Christmas when Mae and Mom usually didn't get that much. One year Datha bought dolls for Natalie and Carrie and a pencil for Aunt Mae. Aunt Mae remembers being upset and asking why she didn't get a doll and Datha said, " because you're too old." This bothered Aunt Mae and she decided that she would just make herself one so she got some cloth and things and made one for her self.
Datha's husband went to Wise, VA to work in the mines. He left Datha for another women he met over there.
