Note: Excerpts from Welch Family History as written by Lola "Alice" Irene Milloff & Barbara Milloff Shane.. "Millard and Lizzie met at Horton's Summitt Sunday School, though the story goes that his first sight of her was from a train. He worked as a guard for the railroad at Baily Bridge or Neely Trestle. They ran away to Bristol, Va to get married. Their early years were spent around Bristol, TN and Scott County, VA area. Later Lizzie and Mill (as he was fondly called) spent some years in Greensboro, NC where they both worked in cotton mills." "My Mother, Lizzie Welch Hatcher, always seemed to be open to God. She took us to a variety of denominational churches: Christian, Baptist, Adventist, and Holiness. It was in the late 1930's that a real commitment and steady involvement with the Assemblies of God church took place and she was very concerned for her family's salvation." "My mother was such a special person, a hard worker, she was very artistic, painted many lovely paintings, made rag dolls, sewed a lot to earn her own money. Worked as a carpenters helper, built her own front porch. Took care of children, worked in tobacco, so many ways. She also loved to fish. Loved going to God's house and always found a Sunday School to take us to as children, no matter the denomination. Later in life she became an Assemblies of God attendee. I've always been thankful for my Mom's influence and teaching us to accept others, regardless of race or creed. Alice says, " Mother Lizzie Minerva Welsh- Grandpa ( Welch ) had had a sister Lizzie and great grandmother on Jenkins side was Minerva Ann Hale."
