Note: John M. Cross GLENDIVE - John Melvin Cross, a certified public accountant, business and civic leader, died at age 61 Thursday' of cancer in Glendive Community Hospital after a two-year illness. Mr. Cross was honored as Montana CPA of 1971, Montana's Small Business Man of 1971, and in 1969 as one of the "good guys and gals," a recognition of the Helena Capitol Press Corps. An active Democrat, he had been chairman of the Dawson County Central Committee, a state committeeman and an alternate delegate to the 1968 national convention. Owner of Cross Petroleum Services, he was president and director of Industrial Engine Service until 1960. A frequent lecture and seminar speaker for the Small Business Administration, Mr. Cross was a member of the state Board of Institutions and board chairman from 1969 until 1972. On the first board for Glendive's new hospital, he was a former director of Grand-view Retirement Home, director of Lower Yellowstone Development Association, on Chamber of Commerce committees and the Montana Planning Board advisory council, and on the Small Business Association. A 27-year member of Lions Club 'and a 25-year member of American Legion, VFW and Elks Lodge, he was g charter member of Frontier Gateway Museum. Born on a homestead near Alexandria, N.D., a son of Melvin and Oline Cross, he served in the Army in Europe in World War II. Mr. Cross graduated from Rocky Mountain College, Harvard School of Business and LaSalle Extension University. In 1943 he married Louise Jarussi of Red Lodge in Chicago. Survivors include his wife; five sons, Dr. Melvin L. Cross of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Gregory J. Cross of Billings, Brian R. Cross of Minneapolis, Justin M. Cross of Glendive and Mark Cross of Missoula; a daughter, Dr. Catherine Cross Maple of Dodge City, Kan.; two grandchildren; and- three brothers, Elmo in Seattle, Wash., Ralph and Morris, both of Alexandria (Alexander), ND. A Lutheran, Mr. Cross was active in the ecumenical rnovement in Glendive. The rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Sunday in Silverdale Mortuary. Services are tentatively set for ~.m. Monday in Zion Lutheran.
