Colden, Erie Co., New York was formed in the mid-1830 around a Grist Mill. Later a Saw Mill was added. The 1850 census shows a growing town. Apparently, the timber in the area was used up by 1855. By then there were a number of un-occupied structures shown in the 1855 Census. By 1860 the exodus from Colden was in full swing.
A large number of the people moved from Colden to New Haven and Oronoco Townships in MN. In addition to Cross and Irish families, the Goulds, the Maze(L), Stamages, Streeters and many other show up in the 1870 Census in these 2 Townships. It appears that maybe the 1st to arrive was William C. Gould and Wife Nancy R. They homesteaded in Cascade Township in 1857.
The group from Colden appear to function as a family group. When parents die, children are assumed by others in the group. As the group spreads out in the area Lyke's, Stambridge (may be part of the Stamage Family), and McNeil's are added to the group.
