a. Note:   From the Roseburg Evening News, Monday, January 21, 1917, page1: "CALOWAY HODGES PASSES AWAY. Caloway Hodges, one of Oregon's oldest pioneers died at his home in the Scotts Valley, Friday, January 19, after a short illness. Mr. Hodges was 87 years of age, having been born in Indiana, December 21, 1829. In 1847, he crossed the plains to Oregon and settled near Yoncalla where his death occurred at the home of his son, J. G. Hodges. He was married at the age of 21 years to Elizabeth Belieu, twelve children being born to the union. Mrs. Hodges died 12 years ago, the body being interred at Medford. He is survived by eight of his children; L. M. Hodges, of Portland; Mrs. Emma Hearin, Mrs. Maude Burdick of Spokane; J. G. Hodges of Roseburg; Herbert and Charles Hodges, of Eugene; Mrs. Alta Merrill, of Grants Pass, and Mrs. Trenna Heard, of Medford. He was firm in the Methodist faith and during his lifetime has been an active worker in that denomination. The funeral will be held at Medford where the body will be buried beside that of his wife."
