a. Note:   According to a letter written by Elizabeth Siegel Turner, Barbara's father, mother and one sister died all in the same year when Barbara was 7 years old. She and two younger brothers were then raised by a guardian but name is unknown. Both brothers died at around the age of 20 or just a little over. One died of tuberculosis, leaving Barbara as the only survivor.
