 January 13, 1939 - The Gatesville Messenger
The oldest twins in Gatesville, Mrs. J. C. Nance and Mrs. Mattie Bradley, were born in Weatherford, Parker County, Texas on January 13, 1863. At the time of their birth, father, Charles Harvey Spencer, guarded the white people from the Indian fifteen days out of forty. The other 25 days were spent grinding wheat to make bread for the soldiers during the Civil War. The mill was located on the Clear Fork of the Brazos. They saw Dallas when there were only three stores, a log courthouse and a log jail. In their travel to the old Ferguson and Reid Mill in Bell County, they met many herds of cattle - sometimes there were a thousand in one herd. Their father operated the mill for several years. Miss Mollie Spencer was married to J. C. Nance in 1890 at the Mormon Mills in Burnett County. They moved to Oglesby, Coryell County in 1893. Ten years later Miss Mattie Spencer was married to J. H. Bradley of Oglesby at the old Cottage Hotel in Gatesville. They have lived in good old Coryell all these years. Mr. Bradley died in 1911, and Mr. Nance died in 1932. The twins live together in this city at 403 South Sixth Street. Both are in very good health, and they do all their work. They walk to church and Sunday school and attend the services each Sunday.
