A Byron man was identified Tuesday as one of two people killed Monday in an accident on Interstate 75 in Crisp County.
Billy D. Rose, 49, was killed when the tractor-trailer he was driving ran off the interstate and struck a group of construction workers laboring in the median. One of the workers, Melvin Day, 49, of Rochelle, was killed.
Four other workers, including Day's son, also were injured. The victim's son, Scott Day, 26, of Pitts, was listed in stable condition Tuesday at Crisp Regional Hospital.
The other workers, Mario Perez, 34, of Cordele; Robert Mattair, 26, of Abbeville; and Jose Perez-Diaz, 32, of Unadilla, were all treated and released from the hospital.
Georgia State Patrol officials said Rose was traveling southbound on I-75 shortly before 3 p.m. Monday when his truck apparently veered off the roadway, struck two parked vehicles and drove into the group of workers. The accident occurred four miles south of Cordele.
The tractor-trailer overturned and burst into flames, trapping Rose inside. Officials are still trying to determine if Rose's truck, or the pipes he was carrying, struck the workers.
Both men were dead when GSP officials arrived at the scene. The accident is still under investigation.
According to state Department of Transportation officials, the Douglas Asphalt workers were in the median doing drainage work at the time of the accident. The construction is part of the state's I-75 widening project, which will make the road six lanes to the Florida state line.
Workers were back on the job Tuesday, said Cindy Lane, spokesperson for the DOT. Southbound traffic was rerouted for more than four hours Monday as officials investigated the accident and cleaned up the scene.
