Notes
a. Note:   Older brother to Bill Dickinson, who married Kathy Thompson (sister to Ellen). While in the U.S. Navy fleet service (1965-1969), Dan was stationed on the USS Algol, USS Hickman County, and USS Prairie. He served on the USS Hickman County (LST) while in Viet Nam where this flat bottom ship could deliver supplies right up on the beach of the Mekong River. Countries he also visited during this enlistment were the Phillipines; Hong Kong, China; Taiwan; Japan; Panama; and Cuba (the Bay of Pigs during the Johnson administration)
While in the U.S. Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (1972-1976), Dan was stationed at Port Hueneme, California, where they served 4 months at homeport and 8 months overseas. First he was in San Juan, Puerto Rico; then Guam; and lastly in Diego Garcia, Indian Ocean. While at Diego Garcia, Dan was injured while he and his battalion were building a Naval Hospital. Blocks were stacked up on both sides of a window and were used to go in and out of the building to cut blocks. When Dan stepped out the window one day, a block had been removed by someone needing a block (instead of getting one out of the block pile). When Dan stepped out and the block wasn't there, he lost his balance and fell 8 feet, hitting his head on the concrete blocks at the bottom of the hill.
He suffered severe migraine headaches from that day on. In 1976 after much suffering, the Navy gave him a medical discharge due to these injuries.
Married at the Church of God (Holiness) Church on Verde Street in Surprise, Arizona. The church was across the street from Ellen's parents' house and is where she and her sisters attended Sunday School for many years. Dan's family lived down the street on the next block, about 3 hours from Ellen's family, and his family also attended this church.
