Only Grandma Bea and her sister Ellen were well enough to attend her funeral. Ellen remembers riding in the back of a car with the funeral director driving and Grandma Bea in the front seat with him. She remembers the little white coffin sitting atop the seat with her. Ellen was only 6 years old.
Brenda and Judy were so sick with the dysentery that they had to be hospitalized. Brenda had a fever so high that she lost all her curly hair; when her hair grew back later, it was straight as a board and remained so the rest of her life. Cheryl was stillborn. Ivy--and most of the family members-- was sick with dysentery and went into early labor. Johnnie tried to take her to the hospital but had a flat tire on the way. An ambulance was called but Cheryl was already born. Only Grandma Bea and Ellen were well enough to attend her funeral. Ellen, even though she was only 6 years old, still remembers riding in the back of the car with the funeral director driving and Grandma Bea sitting in the front seat. She remembers the little white coffin sitting atop the seat alongside her. Cheryl is buried at the Glendale Memorial Cemetery, Glendale, Arizona.
