Newspaper obituary reads: << The death occured in a Nursing Home on Saturday, after a short illness, of of Mr. Edward John Blake Cox, of Upper Basildon; born at Broughton, Wilts in 1880, he later (1888) came to reside at Heron Farm, Bradfield, where for 50yrs he was the estate bailiff to the late Dr. Herbert Watney, during which time he superintended the planting of the estate with trees, the Royal Society's gold medal being won in 1925. His capable management of the herd of Jersey cows on the farm secured very many distinctions in the butter tests at the agricultural shows, and his name became known the world over in connection with cattle. Mr Cox had a large family, six sons serving in the Great War, one making the supreme sacrifice. Upon his retirement 18 months ago, he planned and built a bungalow at Upper Basildon and planted the grounds with many ornamental and fruit trees. He was an excellent shot with a sporting gun. Mr Cox was a Baptist and for many years superintended the Congregational Chapel at Upper Basildon. The interment took place on Wednesday at Holy Trinity, Buckhold. The service was conducted by the Rector of Bradfield, the Rev. S. Nowell-Rostron. The Rev. S.E. Collins, Rector of Basildon, officiated at the organ. Two hymns were sung "Christ will gather in his own" and "Jesu, Lover of my soul". Although the churchyard was consecrated in 1837, no-one according to the records had previously been buried there. >>
