a. Note:   RESEARCH NOTES: Ellen's birth is from an affidavit of the physician who attended Elizabeth at the time of her birth. It is from her mother's claim for James' Civil War Pension. Ellen's birth, marriage, death, and children are all in her obituary published in a newspaper in Creston, Iowa in the month of May 1950. In the pension file and on early census records her name appears as Ellen, but she seems to have gone by Ella as an adult. Joseph and Ella's marriage is recorded in Peoria County Marriages. Their birth and death years can be found in <i>Union County Iowa Cemeteries</I>. Many thanks to Murray Hines who has contributed greatly to information on this family.
