Note: RESEARCH NOTES: Samuel died and was buried on the plains in 1852 as the family travelled westward to Utah." So states Carter Pioneers of Provo Utah a published history of the John Carter and Hannah Knight Libby's descendants. However, the John Harrison Carter family came west in 1850, not 1852, and there is no indication that Samuel was with them. There is a story about his death. It relates that Samuel, a young boy, was playing and pushed Grandpa Sweat who was seated on a wagon tongue. Grandpa fell off and Samuel's father moved to punish the boy, but Grandpa Sweat said, "No, John, you can't whip the child, he is having his last play on earth." Later in the day Samuel began complaining about a pain in his big toe. The pain increased and spread. The boy died before noon the next day. What killed Samuel I have no idea. But it does tell of a family living in a wagon, possibly traveling. It tells of a young boy, young enough to thoughtlessly push an older family member in fun. Samuel would have been 6 years old when his family left Nauvoo and 7 when they moved from Mt Pisgah to Winter Quarters. I believe that that is the time period when Samuel died. Not 1852 as the family history relates.
