a. Note:   RESEARCH NOTES: Melissa is named a sister in the history of Henry Sweat published in Bureau, Marshall, Putnam and Stark Counties. This record names her husbands. Her first marriage was recorded in Knox County. Her husband, Robert Crawford, was drafted and left his wife and two children to fight in the Civil War. He died from wounds recieved in the Battle of Franklin, Tennessee. Melissa, a 22 year old widow, married her husband's brother. Their marriage is also recorded in Knox County. Just before 1870 the young family moved to Nebraska where Melissa's last four children were born. James and Melissa also raised J. Philip Brisbine and John McCarthy. James Crawford served on the school board, two terms as county commissioner and was a member of the Nebraska Legislature in 1885. After James' death Melissa lived near her sons in Murdock for many years. In her later years she fractured her hip and was confined to a wheelchair for the rest of her life. She still listened to the ball games on her radio with many of the neighborhood boys. Her obituary was published in the Lincoln Journal Newspaper. Both James and Melissa are buried in the Wabash Cemetery. Many thanks to Norma Paul for much of this information.
