a. Note:   RESEARCH NOTES: Joshua's life can be glimpsed only through scraps of information. He is mentioned, though not by name, in the journal of Elias Hicks Blackburn, his mother's husband. By the time he was 15 he was not living with his mother and it seems certain that his father was dead. Census records and other sources reveal that his children were born in Utah through 1892. One child's birth is placed specifically in Emery county, Utah. Corbett, born in 1894, is said to have been born in Las Vegas, Nevada and Claudius, born two years later, is claimed to have been born in Bakersfield, California. The younger children, born after 1897, were born in Arizona. Joshua is very probably the Josh Sweat named in a cattle rusling episode recounted by Matt Warner in his book, <I>Last of the Bandit Riders</I>. And an interview with 'Old Josh Sweat' can be found in the Journal History of the Church. Josh claimed to be nearly 90 years of age in this report and if this was Joshua James Sweat he was actually nearer to 76. Joshua was known to his descendants as Younger Sweat.
