Notes
a. Note:   Bailiff of the Graveship of Holme- Manor of Wakefield. The exact date of birth of John is not known but it is estimated that it was around 1640. At this time the name was spelt BATTE John was the Bailiff for the Graveship of Holme in the Manor of Wakefield. This has been gleaned from the Registers using the occasional entries of the official usage of John`s house by wayfarers such as "Ann daughter of Michael Pashley, formerly of Hepworth buried at the house of John Batte in Scholes in Holmfirth December 1701. The Office of Bailiff was also held by one of the sons and followed by two of the Grandchildren of John. The Battyes held the position of Bailiff for about 100 years. See ("The Battyes of Hepworth" by Henry Wilson of New Mill) Henry was the immediate successor to John but John`s son took over as bailiff in 1712 according to the entries in The Parish Registers of Kirkburton Vol 2 Frances Collins Transcripts. Details from the Tribalpages of Malcolm Higgins.
