Notes
a. Note:   H124
Note:   On the 1850 Census there is a William H. Horseman, age 19 years, living in the household of a Samuel Ankers and Henry Ankers, farmers. [note, William married Susan Jane Pool, whose mother had maiden name of Ankers]. William is a laborer. Also with him is a Samuel Horseman, age 14. They could be brothers. There is info on a Samuel Horseman who died young. I will check files. However, other records indicate William's birth year as being 1829, not the 1831 he would be from this Census info.
Note: There is a W.H. Horseman in Loudoun Co. listed on the 1860 Slave Schedule.
The 1860 Federal Census lists William as head of household, age 29, with his wife Susan J., 24 years old, and their children Samuel, age 5, James, age 2, and Sarah E (Elizabeth?) 1/12 year (infant!). William is a blacksmith and has .250 in Personal Estate value. He was born in Loudoun.
The 1870 Federal Census, states that William is 39 years old and is a blacksmith. He was born in Virginia. He lives with his wife Susan, age 34, and their children Samuel, 14; James W., 12; Elizabeth, 10; and John W., 2. Personal property valued at $100.
According to the 1880 Federal Census, William H. Horseman was 49 years old, born in Virginia. His occupation was blacksmith. He was married to Susan J., 45 years old, who kept house. They had five children living in the house, one servant, and William's mother, Sarah, age 73. She was widowed and infirmed at time of Census. Sarah was born in Virginia.
In 1886, William provides the information for the death record of his half-sister Sarah who died Nov. 9, 1886. The record indicates her parents were Stephen and Mary Horseman.
According to the 1900 Federal Census, William is head of household, living with his wife Susan, and children John, Charly, and William H. William and Susan have been married for about 45 years, which would make their wedding date about 1855. The form states William's birth date as being September 1829, and that he is 69 years old (math doesn't 'add up'- I'll keep it at 1831). He is a farmer. Susan was born October 1835 and is 64 years old.
Records from the Union Cemetery in Loudoun County state that he died February 20, 1907 of old age, at the age of 77 years. This would make his birth date about 1830. There is no tombstone. He is buried in Lot 146, Site 0.
Found in 35th Virginia Calvary, by John Divine, our William H. Horseman. "Put., blacksmith, Enl 3/3/62, Waterford; Captured 9/25/63, Woodgrove; In Ft. McHenry 9/29/63; Pt. Lookout 11/1/63; Exchanged 2/18/65; Paroled 4/27/65 @ Edwards Ferry, Md. unit called "Whites Rebels".
{Add in here notes from the book on the 35th Calvary about the "blacksmith" being captured.)
We found on the Internet a record that William applied for a Civil War Pension - Act of 1902, Memo 1903, for service as a Soldier. Also found was a card for Susan J. Horsman in Loudoun for a pension application; Act of 1902; roll #77; page 249. I later received Civil War documents and Pension documents; learned William and Susan were married in Washington, D.C. That's where I finally found her maiden name - Pool or Poole.
Civil War and Pension documents received; not much new info to offer; however, William's signture spelled his surname "Horsman."
From: Mount Zion Old School Baptist church on Rt. 50 near Gilbert's Corner. The church organized in 1850 with 14 members, including...Horsman.
