James Caylor: Court Order 11, Aug 1840; income from Peter Oatyer, Admr of John Moffett dec'd from Peter Oatyer Admr of Walker Muse dec'd of Peter Oatyer for Negro hire, and from rent, paid tuition, leaving $148.98 Returned to court 14 Feb 1843 (Book C:158) From marriage records of Loudoun, James H. Muse to Ann Eliza. Seeders married March 18, 1841 by Rev. S. Gover . Both of Loudoun Co. In the 1850 Federal Census, James Muse and family are listed as living with the family of Hamilton Householder, a merchant. (At least it appears that way, since there is no # assigned to James Muse]. James is 30 years of age, born in Virginia, occupation - tailor. His wife is Ann, 28 years old. Their children are Virginia, 6 years old; Betsey, 4 years (probably Sarah Elizabeth), and James, 2. According to the 1860 Federal Census, James H. Muse was head of household, married to Mary E. James is listed as 40 years old, a tailor by occupation, with .650 of real estate value, and .200 of personal estate value. He was born in Loudoun. His wife is 37 years old and his children listed are: Virginia C., age 15; Sarah E., age 14, James E., age 11; Mary L., age 9; Thomas L., age 7; John W, age 3. These children are evidently the children of his previous marriage to Ann E. Seeders, since his marriage to Mary was in 1860. 1870 United States Federal Census about James Muse Name: James Muse Estimated Birth Year: abt 1821 Age in 1870: 49 Birthplace: Virginia Home in 1870: Northern Division, Loudoun, Virginia Race: White Gender: Male Value of real estate: View Image Post Office: Hamilton Household Members: Name Age James Muse 49 Mary Muse 47 Susan Muse 4 Jane Hook 80 The "Loudoun Country Marriage Records" (a book) lists his marriage to Mary E. Muse, one of the oldest men in Hamilton, died at his home at 3 o'clock Thursday morning of pneumonia. Had he lived until the 22nd instant he would have been 77 years old. Mr. Muse was a member of the Loudoun Guards, which subsequently became a part of the Seventeenth Virginia Regiment, with which he served through the war in the Confederate service. He was buried Saturday with Masonic honors. Notes taken from the Will of James H. Muse, filed March 8, 1897. His wife at that time ws Edna Jane Muse. He gave to her his house in the Town of Hamilton and the farm left him by his Aunt Alcey Elizabeth Shyrock. The farm was subject to life estate of Samuel Shyrock. Farm was in Broad Run. Susan J. Horsman was to get part of his property, as well as children Sally E. Powers, Mary L. Powers, Thomas S. and James E. Muse. Son John was to get 25 cents!! Loudoun Co., VA Will Boox X, pp 262-263; Book Z, pp 382-383 Note: I found a Samuel Shryock, age 44 in the 1900 federal Census. He is son of George Shryock, 81 years old, a widower. There are two other sons - Richard and Christopher. Also, another Shryock family living next door. It is possible that james Muse's aunt Alcey was married to George. perhaps I can locate an early marriage record for them. In Chancer Suit index found the following to look up: Muse, James H. et al case #3152 completed 1879 Muse vs Muse #1714 1801 Muse - Seeders M1006 1866 On July 20, 1998, Jim and I visited the cemetery of the Harmony Methodist Church in Hamilton, Loudoun Co, VA to find the tombstone for James Henry and his wives. We knew they were there; just wanted to see. We found the headstones rather quickly; they are near the back part of the church. The top side of James's headstone read: "Our Father"; then on the face it read "James H. Muse Born Feb 23, 1820 Died Feb 11, 1897 in the 77th year of his age "Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord." 'MOTHER" Mary e. Muse wife of James H. Muse born Aug 11, 1823 Died Nov. 26, 1880 "Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God." "Sacred to the memory of My Stepmother" Edna J. Muse wife of James H. Muse Died Jan 14, 1901 in the 78th year of her age "Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness for they shall be filled." From the booklet "Miscellaneous Hamilton Info" at the Balch Library in Leesburg, the following from the Hamilton Book Club Historial Project - 1966 page: "There are records of several tailors shops in old Hamilton. In 1890 or before, a Mr. Muse had a tailor shop about where the Kitt's home is in East Hamilton." ********* Found an index to Loudoun Co. Court Order Books. Need to look up 4:247 for James Muse, orphan of Walker Muse dec'd, to John F. Barrett, to be a tailor. James was 15 years old on Feb. 23, 1835; order date 11 Aug. 1835 ******************* email from Jim Muse (12-15-06) Concerning Walker Muse. I am beginning to believe he is buried in Westmoreland County. Will drive down there sometime and see if I can locate his grave site. I suppose you know the Muse property in Westmoreland Co is considered one of the oldest farms to be farmed from father to son to son in this country. I believe Larry Muse still resides on the property. A large portion of it has just recently been sold. I just recently read an article pertaining to the sale somewhere on the net. If I can locate it again, I will send it to you. There is an annual Muse reunion which is held down in Southern Pines, NC. After the family began scattering in the early 17th century many of them went to Moore County, NC. They had quite a large estate there. Another Muse ventured into Texas and eventually became the Sheriff of Silver City, NM. I was travelling through there years back. When I checked into one of the local motels, the clerk asked me if I was related to him. She told me there was information pertaining to him in the local library so I went there and looked it up. Apparently he was quite well known back then. One of the articles related to him coming back to Virginia to settle some situation pertaining to the passing of his mother or grandmother. I guess you also know there are two towns in the USA named Muse. One is in PA and the other one is in OK. I was walking down a street in Oklahoma City one time and saw a big Baptist church named Muse. *********************** From: http://www.robertstoy.com/database/StoyFamily-o/p23.htm#i226 Website of Robert Lee Stoy of Fairfax co., VA James Henry had as his guardian James Caylor upon his father's death circa 1832 when James would have been about 12. There was a settlement of accounts, payable to James Caylor, by Peter Oatyer, administrator of Walker's estate. There was other income due James Henry, paid to James Caylor, from the estate of John Moffett, administered also by Peter Oatyer.8 He was plaintiff against his guardian, James Caylor, in 1843 to obtain money owed him ($148.98). Caylor did not appear and the court ordered payment with interest starting on 12 Aug 1842.
