Notes
a. Note:   ter. Orphaned with the early death of her father, when she was 8 or 9, she and her sister nearly were put in an orphanage by her young step-mother, before her paternal aunt and uncle, Ethel (Ford) and George WHITMORE, obtained custody and raised their nieces with their two girls. Educated in the public schools of Melrose, Edna married Milton Swanson at age 23, after his return from college. An energetic and refined woman, she would bear two sons and raise two adopted girls over the course of their 65-year marriage.
After the war, she and Milton purchased and ran the famous Wayside Country Store on the Marlborough/Sudbury (MA) town line from 1947 to 1971. Expanding the goods to include “old fashioned” foodstuffs, such as penny candy, aged cheddars, and barrel pickles, the store developed a world-wide reputation and was featured in such outlets as the Tonight Show. After retirement, she and Milton lived along the coast, in Newburyport, Massachusetts, and York Beach, Maine, becoming "Nana" to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She died at age 88 of heart complications. Has living issue.
Note:   Born in Melrose, Edna lived with her father and step-mothers in Melrose, Everett, and Dorches
