Note: According to the Honor Book, Sangamon County Illinois, 1917-1919, Edward J. Bretz "Sergeant, 42nd Company, Coast Artillery, U.S.A. Born January 7, 1884 in Springfield. Entered service April 10, 1917 in San Francisco, California. Received his training at Ft. Baker, California. Having had previous service in the army and navy, he was held at Fort Baker to train new men. Was at Fort Baker when the Armistice was signed. In service at time of writing" (1920). He was baptised Edward "Carl" at St. Peter & Paul church in 1884 (#2018 of birth records) but was known as Edward "J." Bretz. He and his wife were members of St. Patrick's church and his wife, Anna, preceeded him in death in 1954. In the 1930 City directory of Springfield, Il he and his wife Anna J. are listed at 2027 E. Edwards St, and he is an elevator operator. 1930 CENSUS Edward J and Anna L Bretz lived at 2027 E.
