Note: According to the Honor Book, Sangamon County Illinois 1917-1919, "Duke" was a Mechanic, Company D, 310th Regiment, 78 division, Infantry, U.S.A. Son of Mr and Mrs J.M. Bretz, 1330 E. Capitol Avenue in Springfield. Born August 25, 1889 in Springfield. Entered the service February 23, 1918 and received training at Camp Taylor and Camp Sherman. Sailed overseas September 3, 1918 on the Karmala. Was stationed at Knotty Ash, Liverpool and DeAvours, France. Was in Camp DeAvours, France when the Armistice was signed. Discharged June 11, 1919, at Camp Grant, Illinois.
