Note: According to the Historical Encyclopedia of Illinois and History of Sangamon County published in 1912, "Jane's mother, Laura Taylor, was of Virginia until she and her husband moved to Kentucky. The Taylors were of Mayflower stock." The 1900 Census of Springfield, Il (pg 10, ed 89, pct 3), has Jane, 76, born Oct 1823 in Virginia as were her parents. She had 12 children of which 6 were living in 1900. Been married 59 years, currently living with daughters Mary & Catherine and husband John. She died several weeks after this census taken). Her obit also says she was born in Virginia, but the early census all list her birth in Ky (1850, 1860, and 1880; the 1870 census incorrectly states she was born in HesseCassel, Germany.) For several years I had Jane as being born in Culpeper County, VA, but in most censuses she is listed as being born in KY. Her daughters list her as KY born in the 1910 and 1920 census forms, although John F still states Virginia, and he wrote the obit and death certificate. (West Virginia and Kentucky in 1790 were part of Virginia--according to Map Guide to the U.S. Federal Censuses 1790-1920 by Thorndale & Dollarhide, page 367) Our family oral history has Jane's parents name's and Wesley and Laura Taylor Pilcher, however after three years searching, I still can't find the parents of this couple, their wedding date, their heritage,etc. However information on "Lurena" Jane at the Frankfort, Franklin County Ky courthouse shows the Bond for John Bretz the day before he married Jane and that her father's name was "John", not Wesley. (Source: Franklin County Court Records Order Book L) If Jane had a guardian, was her father dead in 1841? (William Pilcher born 1843?)
"Franklin County Court Records Page 52, Book ??? Monday January 18th 1841 On the motion of Lurena Jane Pilcher infant of John Pilcher above the age of fourteen. It is ordered that Will A Gorham be appointed her guardian. Whereupon he entered into bond with Lysander Hood his security (?) in the final (?) sum of One hundred dollars conditioned according to law." (According to the Franklin Co, KY Guardian Book 2, page 138, this same information happened on January 18, 1840 (a Saturday- not on Monday, Jan 18, 1841) One of these sources is in error.
The marriage bond: "Franklin County, Kentucky Register for Marriages 1791-1850, January 18, 1841, Known all Men by these presents, that we John Bretz and William A. Gorham are held and firmly bound unto the Commonwealth of Kentucky, in the sum of L50 to the payment whereof well and truly be made, we bind ourshelves, our heirs, &c jointly and sererally, firmly by these presents. Sealed with our seals, and dated this 18th day of January 1841. The condition of the above obligation is such, that whereas a marriage is shortly intended to be solemnized between the above bound John Bretz, and Lurena Jane Pilcher of this county: Now, shall it always appear, that there is no just cause to obstruct the said marriage, the the above obligation to be void, else to remain in full force and virture. Signed by John Bretz and W. A Gorham Attested to by A. H. Kennich." This may be her father in the following census. The dates fit. 1840 CENSUS of Frankfort (North Division), Franklin County, KY Image #3 of 28 on Ancestry.com John Pilcher One male under 5 (Unknown son ) one male between 40-50 (John Wesley Pilcher born between 1790-1800) one female under 5 (Margurith (Margaret?) born abt 1836, age 4 -(She is also in 1850 census living with Laura J. & John Bretz in Frankfort, then aged 14) One female between 15-20 (Laurena Jane was born in 1821, so she was 19 at this time-she married in 1841- next year) One female between 20-30 (?-Jane must have had an older sister or step mother, cause this female is too young to be her mother.) Probably step-mother If so, Lauara Taylor died bet 1821 and 1835-6.
(William b abt 1843 (He is also in the 1860 census in Spgfd living with sister (?) when he was 17) If he is a son, then John died after 1843)
